Don’t Fall Into Tyre Trap During Lockdown

Motorists across the UK are being warned to check the state of their tyres during Covid Lockdown as lack of activity could make them unsafe according to a leading charity.

With vehicles on the roads less often, due to working from home and furlough, many vehicles won’t have left their drives or roadsides in some time, and Tyresafe are suggesting that it is not just tyre-tread which can make a tyre a hazard.

According to the charity, lack of use on tyres can make the rubber harden and more prone to cracking, and while this may take some time, for older tyres this process may speed up. Tyresafe suggest that for cars which are likely to be used for a long period of time, the wheels should be covered for protection. The charity also suggests that tyre health can be maintained by regularly moving the vehicle, even if it is for a short distance. The weight of a vehicle can create pressure-points on cars and these weak spots could lead to a blowout once the vehicle returns to the road.

Stuart Jackson, TyreSafe chairman, said: “It’s easy to fall into the trap of ignoring maintenance checks when you’re not using your vehicle, but there are good reasons to keep up the routine. Most likely, using a vehicle with underinflated tyres will just add to your fuel bill and increase wear but there are instances when the outcome is far, far more severe.

“It’s imperative all vehicle owners continue to check their tyres throughout Lockdown – look after your tyres and they will look after you.”
