Ford Cuts Big Model From UK Sale

Tue 4th Jun 2019

Ford Motor Company has made the shock announcement that it is cutting one its UK line-up by one due to its ongoing restructuring efforts.

The US company recently announced that it was shedding 7,000 jobs worldwide, and a consequence of that is changes to the production infrastructure in the UK. As the motoring industry makes changes to focus on a future looking at electric vehicles there has been some upheaval, particularly at the bigger brands.

The Ford Edge SUV is a particular victim of those changes, with the names that the large 4x4 has not made a huge impact in the UK, only 1,700 registered in 2018 - a significant drop from the 4,100 which were sold as new in the previous year. Despite Ford launching an updated model late last year, it appears that they are cutting their losses and replacing it with the Puma crossover later in the year.

A Ford statement said: “The decision to limit Edge availability to seven key markets is in line with our strategy aimed at strengthening the Ford brand and creating a sustainably profitable business in Europe, including by taking action to improve or exit less profitable vehicle lines.

“We are introducing other exciting vehicles soon that will better match customer demand and build on our success in the growing utility segment in Europe. Edge availability will be limited only in Europe and will not impact any other region.”
