Wed 31st Jul 2019

When it comes to passing an MOT not all cars are born equal, the simple facts of the matter are that some cars are simply better equipped at passing the dreaded test.

So what are the motors which are the MOT heroes? Well now thanks to a major survey by What Car? Magazine we know the answers. The leading automotive consumer expert sourced the most recent data from the DVSA to discover which were the brands top of the charts.

The best performing car overall is the Nissan Leaf, rated in the family category, the EV which has been on the market since 2011 has a remarkably low fail rate of 3.7%
Smaller cars tend to do better in the survey with the Subaru Forester (4.7%), Mitsubishi Mirage (4.8%) and Mazda 3 all scoring under 5%. But the luxury cars do get some plaudits as well, with the Mercedes GLA (4.8%) and Aston Martin DB9 (4.9%) also featuring with low fail rates.

Mini’s Hatch also performs well in the What Car? survey with a fail rate of 5.0%, another small car category is the SUV and the Vauxhall Mokka (5.4%) does well in that regard.

The final two cars in the top 10 are the Skoda Citigo and the Peugeot 108 which from the City car category have low fail rates of just 6%.

The Vauxhall Tigra is the worst performing car with the highest fail rate of the lot at a whopping 58.1%.

What Car? have also revealed that between 2015 and 2018 there were 211,000 motorists caught by the police without an MOT, but following an overhaul of the system in May last year, offences in that regard dropped by 30%.
