Which Cars Are Most Vegan Friendly?

Thu 10th Sep 2020

While a plush leather interior may be marked down as the height of luxury in cars, there are some who would prefer that animal products are not used at all. So which car to choose?

New research from a major finance website has put together an index of the kindest cars in a variety of categories.

The index from money.co.uk looks at two aspects, does it have leather, and does it have carbon emissions? With three cars fitting the bill in both categories. The Renault Twizy comes out top of the index due to it having the more affordable price tag, but the EV also has leather-free seats, steering wheel and gear-stick/handbrake. The Renault Zoe and Polestar 2 also tick the box in every way.

With a range of car manufacturers offering artificial leather alternatives such as Sensico (Ford), Sensatec (BMW) and Artico (Mercedes), there is now the option for car buyers to take luxury at the same time as being animal friendly.

But the options for going greener don’t end with fake leather, conscientious buyers can now opt for vegan-friendly tyres and use cruelty-free cleaning products, while many point out that buying a used car is the ultimate recycling spend.

However, the research does point the finger at two of the headline grabbers of the eco-friendly car market, the Prius and the Tesla.

"According to manufacturer websites, the entry-level Prius and Tesla's currently come with leather steering wheels meaning that they sit slightly lower in our ranking than expected,” the report says.

"However, Tesla has previously said that they will happily change any steering wheel to one made with a vegan-friendly leather alternative for free on request.

"Anyone looking to buy a Prius could also ask whether it's possible to switch their steering wheel to one made of foam or Toyota's leather alternative, Softex."
