Which Vehicles Are Top Of The MOT Class?

Thu 15th Apr 2021

The dreaded MOT is a major source of motoring stress for many drivers, but new analysis from an influential consumer group could help you make the right choice when buying your next car and take away some of those nerves.

It’s a fact of life that not all cars are equal, and research from What Car? magazine has revealed the top 50 cars that are most likely to get through the MOT without fail. The analysis, which is based on figures from the Department of Transport, looked at 745,000 MOT records and determined which vehicles were best at passing first time. The published data, based on models aged between three and eight years old found that the Hyundai Ioniq sits top of the class, with an average pass rate of 96.18 per cent. The Ioniq’s performance in the analysis is a great boost for the environmentalists, as it is only available as a hybrid or a pure electric, showing that green is best when it comes to the MOT. The car in second place on the list has similar green credentials, the BMW i8, though you will have to buy one second-hand if you want a piece of the action as BMW are no longer manufacturing the EV.

The biggest winner in the MOT analysis appears to be Porsche, who have an overall passrate of 91.5% and have four cars in the top ten, the Boxter, 911, Cayman and Macan all scoring above 90 per cent. Mazda (MX-5, CX-3) and Lexus (NX, RX) complete the top ten with two cars each.

“One of the first things used buyers do is check a vehicle's MOT record to see how well it's been maintained and if it's suffered lots of faults,” said What Car? Editor, Steve Huntingford.

“Our extensive study reveals the models with the best MOT pass rates, ranging from large SUVs to city cars. Buyers can use it to help them choose the most dependable models.

“Although the top 50 list contains several prestige cars, that tend to have lower mileage and immaculate service records, it's reassuring to find some budget and family cars in the mix.”
